Old Meets New: Stylists Love the Cynthia Findlay Collection

Nicola Smith, stylist and owner of Her Hidden Agenda, chose lots of beautiful jewellery from the Cynthia Findlay collection to style a photo shoot for Issue #8 of Contra Magazine. Some of the pieces she used are pictured above.  You can contact us for more information.

Staged at hot spot The Ossington in Toronto, the mood is ultra chic, giving our classic antique and vintage jewellery a decidedly youthful, updated spin. Pictured against exposed brick, bare skin, denim and lace, and juxtaposed with oversized Jackie O sunglasses and Marie Antoinette-inspired wigs; our freshwater pearls, Victorian cameos and chunky gemstone rings are super sexy and on-trend. Vive la Révolution!

June Birthstone: The Elegant Pearl

Summer is in our sights and we could not be more pleased. We love June, and imagine you do too.  What better way to celebrate the coming season, a June wedding or the birthday of your someone special, than by giving the timeless gift of pearls, which just so happen to be the official stone of June!

Pearl jewellery is an elegant addition to any wardrobe.  Whether it be a bold string of baroque pearls worn peeking out from beneath a classic suit, or a Victorian seed pearl lavaliere worn as a delicate accent to a formal (maybe even bridal) gown, pearls will forever be that classic accent that is suitable for any occasion.

Happy Victoria Day!

Queen Victoria’s Birthday is May 24th and every year England and Commonwealth celebrate the birth of England’s longest reigning monarch.  During her 63 year reign she saw her small island nation become a world dominating empire, she saw the industrial revolution ignite and witnessed scientific advancements that helped shape our world.  This portrait shows her later in life – she lived for many years in deep morning for her husband Price Albert.  She lived for 40 years as a widow, retired someone from the public life.   As Canadians, we have a deep attachment to Victoria since our country had its confederation during her reign.

Happy Birthday Queen Victoria!

May Birthstone: The Vibrant Emerald

(This elegant 5.6 ct emerald ring with tapered shank set in platinum and 18kt yellow gold is a true beauty. The colour of the emerald is an intense very slightly blueish green. This ring is available online and in our store at 284 King St. W!)

Isn’t it fitting that as the green buds of spring are upon us we enter the month of the Emerald. Another stone in the beryl family, emeralds measure about an 8 on the Mohs hard scale (diamonds being a 10). Emeralds have been valued since ancient times and have often been associated with clairvoyance, healing and contentment.

When you look into the rich fiery depths of an emerald, it is no wonder these stones have always carried a mystical reputation.  They can be absolutely stunning in their colour and depth, and make truly special adornments for the lucky wearer.

The most beautiful stones have been said to hail from Colombia, though stunning stones have been mined in India, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, and Zimbabwe.

The Cynthia Findlay Collection at Toronto Antiques on King has an impressive and varied selection of emerald jewellery, from Art Deco Rings to gorgeous pendants.  Find the perfect magical stone for your special someone today.
