Calendar Girls

If you’ve seen the movie, I bet you can’t wait to see the play. If you haven’t seen the move, I bet you can’t wait to see the play. Nude calendars mostly exist in first year dorm rooms and garages…unless… the nude calendar supports a good cause. In that case, you will find them in greenhouses, kitchens, dining rooms etc. That’s ring, Calendar Girls is playing in Toronto at the Royal Alex Theater!

Before the show, why not pop by Toronto Antiques on King and check out our sunflower-themed inventory? We’d love to see you cynthiafindlay.com

Question: How far have you gone for charity?

Royal Wedding: The Countdown

Hello everyone! The royal wedding is fast approaching and we are obsessed.  We love romance, rings and large ceremonies. But the real reason is that we (happily) have not recovered from childhood princess fantasies. To be a bride is to be a princess. We see princess’ every day and we help to make their moments special. That is why we are so excited for the upcoming royal wedding. Kate Middleton is everything a princess should be, regal, graceful and generous. But, she is not from a royal family, proving that anyone can be a princess. Okay, we’re extrapolating a bit. Obviously when Middleton gets married she will become an actual princess and we can’t all marry an actual prince, but we do see everyday women becoming princesses. Romance is in the small things. From the condo to the castle, romance makes anything possible. Engagement rings celebrate the everyday princesses.

The Cynthia Findlay Collection is selling  this Kate Middleton-style  ring set in sterling silver in a variety of sizes. They are $100 each and $50 dollars goes to Make a Wish Foundation in your name (or a person’s name of your choosing). Visit our website and let us know how many rings you would like (they make great gifts, especially if you are having a royal wedding party) cynthiafindlay.com/contact

Queen Latifah Wears Cynthia Findlay Necklace

“He had it coming!” catapulted Chicago and Queen Latifah to the Oscars and made its way into common parlance. This April marks the tenth anniversary of the filming of Chicago. Ten years ago Toronto Antiques on King Loaned Queen Latifah some fabulous jewellery, including the now iconic citrine necklace. We are busy reminiscing these past ten years (reminiscing happens easily in an antique shop), and seeing our jewellery on Queen Latifah in Chicago is definitely a highlight.

This necklace, as well as her ring, which is not visible in this picture, is sill a proud part of the Cynthia Findlay Collection. Significant in its own right, this citrine necklace is fit for any queen.

Make Earth Hour Last All Year by Buying Vintage

On March 26th (tomorrow) millions of people around the world will turn off all their electricity between 8:30 and 9:30 to observe earth hour. For those of us who live in cities, downtown will feel like a super-hopeful Gotham city. This year earth hour organizers are asking us to go, “beyond the hour, [and] after the lights go back on think about what else you can do to make a difference.” Why not make a green commitment by buying vintage items? Buying pre-loved merchandise means that you have not contributed to an economy that produces new materials. It also saves tonnes of beautiful and historical items from the landfills.

Adria Vasil from Now Magazine recommends the Cynthia Findlay Collection as a place to find green friendly engagement rings. She writes,  “Going the vintage route means no new metals had to be extracted and refined, and no new stones had to be bloodily yanked from the ground.” Antique engagement rings are not only environmental but ethical as well. If you’re still not convinced, one look at the unique antique styles will make you a vintage convert!

From Ochi to Sochi (with a little bit of Toronto in the middle)

We made a new friend who’s going places. Like most good influences, he is bringing a whole team with him. Cliff Johnson is the manager of the Jamaica Ski Team and he is bent, bound and determined that a member from his team will be at the 2014 Russian Olympics. The name of his campaign? “From Ochi to Sochi.” Ochi is the small town where the team is from in Jamaica and Sochi is the future home of the 2014 olympics in Russia. Cliff was planning on launching a media campaign to raise money for his team but he needed the perfect prop. Enter Toronto Antiques on King and our stunning, authentic Russian Military Hats. Even more exciting, with enough sponsorship, Cliff hopes to outfit his whole team in these hats. These hats come in blue, black, white and red and are part of a larger collection of contemporary Russian millitaria. They cost $39.99 each and the team needs eleven hats. If you would like to sponsor the Jamaican Ski team by gifting them a hat call Toronto Antiques on King and we will make sure a hat gets to Cliff.  When you see Cliff and his entourage running around Toronto between media stints, compliment their hats and tell them you are looking forward to seeing them at the olymics.

Couple Gets Engaged at Toronto Antiques on King

Warning: the following is not for those who cry during romantic comedies.

Listen up all you princes and princesses-in-training, here is a story about how to get it done. “It” being the proposal and “done” being the anticipated acceptance. After Aizick treated her to a mani-pedi, Jen couldn’t find Aizick anywhere in their home.  Instead, she was home alone with a puzzle piece. A lover of games, and especially scavenger hunts, Jen followed the clues all over Toronto, including Mountain Equipment Co-op, to look for “rocks.” At Mountain Equipment she found an employee who was expecting her, a green balloon and a gift certificate, but no rocks.

Finally her clues led her to the Cynthia Findlay Collection at Toronto Antiques on King for a very precious kind of rock. Here, Jen spotted another green balloon with a toblerone bar and a note that said “turn around.”  By the time she had done a full turn, Aizick was on his knees and Jen was in tears. (Ahem…Jen wasn’t the only one in tears…).

Like a beautiful butter cream icing on top of the best cake you’ve ever had, Aizick then treated Jen to a stunning sapphire and diamond engagement ring from the Cynthia Findlay Collection and the couple lived happily ever after.
