Judith Miller at Toronto Antiques on King

We had a great day with Judith Miller, author of the 2011-2012 Antiques Price Guide,  on Tuesday. We loaned Judith a load of interesting and quirky antiques to aid her appearance on Breakfast Television Tuesday morning (she supplied her own fake!). She used our Chinese vase to discuss the rising interest in Chinese antiques and our czech glass lamp to elaborate on vintage decorating trends. We want to thank Manda Group for supplying Miller and organizing this event.

Following her Breakfast Television event, Miller came to Toronto Antiques on King for a book signing, a media interview, and a free identification clinic. We all had a great time, had entirely too much coffee and learned a lot from Miller.

Although we are only blessed with visits from Miller once every few years, we do always have an expert on staff who can talk with you about your treasures. We are always buying interesting jewellery, silver, china, glass and porcelain. Please contact us to make an appointment!

The Listening Season

Although we try, we can’t really say it is the Christmas season yet. However, this year we are calling this pre-Christmas season the “listening season.” Tread quietly and you will hear the faintly whispered hints from loved ones. Be a good listener and you will be a good giver, which is really the best gift of all.

Red Rubies are the Colours of Christmas

Happy listening everyone! To facilitate your “listening” we have set up a wish list and gift registry cynthiafindlay.com. Encourage those you know to set one up or set up one yourself. We look forward to seeing you for Christmas shopping!

The Chair Affair!

Did you go to the Chair Affair this year? If you did, then you already know that it was a lot of fun and a smashing success. The Chair Affair, put on by the Furniture Bank and in its second year, showcased designs of many prominent Toronto artists who re-design old, donated chairs into something beautiful and auctions them off. We especially loved this chair by our friend Sarah Richardson.

This year the auction raised $93 000 to ensure the continued success of the Furniture Bank. Below are the chairs that we donated to the event. Fabulous, aren’t they? (We have a matching, genuine leopard coat if you’re interested).

Wishful Drinking: Our Staff Party

I’m trying to write a blog about the fabulous night we had last night watching Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher’s one-woman autobiographical show, but I am distracted because Paul Simon just came on the radio and my, the man can create a beautiful sound. “Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine,” is he singing  about Carrie? Last night Fisher advised, “if you can get Paul Simon to write a song about you, do it.” Good suggestion, but I don’t think Paul Simon writes songs about ordinary people and neither is Carrie Fisher ordinary.

“If my life weren’t funny it would just be true” opens Fisher. Trust Princess Leia to transport her audience. This time we are transported into the intimate and hilarious nuances of Fisher’s mind. While simultaneously true and funny, Fisher talks as easily about mental illness as she does about “Hollywood Inbreeding.”
Wishful Drinking is an intimate show, and for the Toronto Antiques on King staff that intimacy was magnified. Fisher purchased many items on her stage from Toronto Antiques on King. Last night Fisher mentioned Cynthia Findlay three times, thanking her for the beautiful objects and suggesting that she could be her set decorator.

A Happy (Royal) Couple

Who says only royalty can enjoy a royal life? Katherine and Darren have a romance story that rivals that of the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge. First, the couple enjoyed high tea at Dalvay by the Sea, the resort where Prince William and Kate Middleton stayed on their recent trip to PEI. After their the crumpets and clotted cream, Katherine and Darren went to the beach at PEI National Park-Dalvay  where Darren surprised Katherine with her dream ring and a proposal to start the rest of their lives together.

You guessed it, this stunning ring comes from the Cynthia Findlay Collection. Are you feeling inspired? Check out our selection of engagement rings cynthiafindlay.com
